More sustainable production

Bamboo Basics stands for more sustainable production. We regularly receive questions about the ecological and human aspects of our production processes. Logical, because our customers are making increasingly conscious choices. That's why we want to be transparent about everything that has to do with these issues.

Take a look at our life cycle assessment report here, in which we describe our impact for three categories: CO2 footprint, water consumption and land use.

63 % reduction in the CO2 footprint

A Bamboo Basics T-shirt has a total impact of 2.04 kg CO2 equivalent. An industry standard cotton t-shirt has a total carbon footprint of 5.32 kg CO2 equivalent. This is mainly caused by the use of cotton fibers, electricity and bleaching of the fibers. The transportation emissions of both T-shirts amount to 12 grams of CO2, a small proportion of the total. The Bamboo Basics T-shirt saves 63% of the CO2 footprint compared to the cotton shirt.

64 % less water consumption

On average, a Bamboo Basics T-shirt consumes 972 liters of water during production. This consists of rainwater, freshwater and recycled (clean) water. The use of organic cotton has the greatest impact (28% of the T-shirt). A standard cotton T-shirt consumes an average of 2700 liters of water. The Bamboo Basics T-shirt saves 64% water compared to a cotton T-shirt.

30 % less land consumption

A Bamboo Basics T-shirt scores 42.65 points for land use. An industry standard cotton T-shirt scores 61.33 points. The Bamboo Basics T-shirt saves 30% land compared to the cotton shirt. When calculating land use, we calculate in pts (points). This measures changes in soil quality and the amount of land used to grow the raw material. The lower the yield, the better the quality of the soil and the fewer hectares of land are needed to grow the raw material.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Bamboo Basics products carry the OEKO-TEX 100 label. STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is one of the world's best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. If a textile article carries the STANDARD 100 label, you can be sure that every part of this article, i.e. every thread, every button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article is therefore safe for human health.

Slow Fashion

Recycling and upcycling in the fashion industry are increasingly on the rise. Just like second-hand and vintage. And we support this 100%. For us as an underwear brand, recycling or offering our products second-hand is a little more difficult and, above all, not as hygienic ;). For this reason, Bamboo Basics focuses on "slow fashion". Basic styles in non-fashion-conscious colors and of high quality. In this way, we ensure that customers can use our items for a long time and don't get tired of them quickly.

No pesticides and insecticides

Bamboo naturally requires no insecticides or pesticides to grow. In contrast, cotton is responsible for up to 11% of all pesticides and 25% of all insecticides used worldwide every year. The use of pesticides is a major problem in the cultivation of cotton (in particular). Especially in intensive cotton cultivation, pesticides are often used to prevent various pests and diseases that have a huge negative impact on the local environment. In bamboo cultivation, no pesticides are required for pest control or disease prevention. This makes a big difference in terms of the impact on people, animals and the environment.

Eco-chain

Bamboo Basics is investing to become a CO2 neutral brand. We are working to reduce water and CO2 emissions per product. Together with Ecochain, we measure and improve the environmental footprint of all Bamboo Basics to become more aware of the impact and be transparent for our consumers. We also call this Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Bamboo Basics offsets the footprint through greening projects. Ecochain works with ecoinvent, the world's leading LCI database. The data sets in ecoinvent cover a wide range of products, services and processes. Ecoinvent is considered the largest, most consistent and transparent database on the market.

Tanboocel

We use Tanboocel. This process ensures that no harmful substances are released into the environment. They use a circular process in which 100% of the materials used are collected and recycled. Tanboocel bamboo viscose fibers are a more environmentally friendly alternative to bamboo viscose. Tanboocel is antibacterial, hydrophilic and breathable. By reusing the chemicals, Tanboocel forms a closed loop.

Organic cotton

To make our product stronger and give it a longer life, we use organic cotton in a number of our items (28%). In addition to bamboo, cotton is also used in the composition of our boxer shorts and T-shirts. Cotton is very important for the strength and structure of the clothing. The combination of bamboo and cotton ensures that your Bamboo Basics items last longer and do not sag. We manage to limit the proportion of cotton in our products to a maximum of 28%. The cotton we use is organic cotton, which is more environmentally friendly. Organic cotton is almost the same as conventional cotton, but the difference lies in the use of pesticides. Cotton comes from the cotton plant and to ensure that these plants are not covered with small creatures, the plants are sprayed with chemical pesticides. These products pollute the soil and are bad for the cotton crop and the population. The soil is increasingly depleted by the chemicals and the water and air are also polluted. To prevent microorganisms from destroying the cotton crop, organic fertilizers and plant and animal waste are used instead of pesticides to fertilize and protect the land. Organic cotton is therefore not only better for your skin, but also better for the earth.

Bamboo grows 30 times faster than cotton

Bamboo uses the soil in which it grows more efficiently. Bamboo grows 30 times faster than cotton and the roots remain in the soil, after which the plant continues to grow. This prevents soil erosion and requires less m2 of agricultural land. This prevents deforestation and creates space for growing food, for example. One of the biggest advantages of bamboo is that the plant produces an enormous yield with minimal effort. In addition, the plant is left to grow after harvesting. This makes the bamboo cultivation process extremely efficient.

Pandas

The bamboo used by Bamboo Basics is a different species to the bamboo eaten by the panda and does not come from the animal's natural habitat.

Vegan

Bamboo Basics is a vegan brand. The most important feature of vegan clothing is that no animals or animal materials are used in its manufacture. Specifically, this means that no wool, leather, fur, felt, feathers, silk or suede are used.
